FROM HERE AND FROM THERE
This project explores what it means to live in the U.S. while growing up with an existing heritage. It considers how subcultures exist and evolve within American culture, revealing the layered and complex experiences of transnational identity and social belonging.
Legacy is framed as an ongoing process that shapes and preserves identity. Aimed at first-generation individuals and those working to preserve heritage. Its goal is to highlight how identity is continuously negotiated and sustained through experience.
Medium 1: WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
A series of nine interviews with individuals living in the U.S., both those born here and those who migrated. Each interview reflects a different yet similar story on how identity is shaped through culture, language, values, traditions, and community as they evolve within an American context. Because many of us inherit our cultures while also adapting to new environments, the project becomes a conversation about continuity and change: how much of our culture do we carry with us, and how does it shift over time?
Medium 2: WHAT REPRESENTS YOU?
A series of nine framed posters, each centered on an object chosen in response to the question, “What object represents you?” Each piece pairs the object with a quote in AR reflecting the individual’s experience, from fond memories to moments tied to identity. Through reflection, each person revisits when the object became significant, forming a larger conversation about what stays with us and why.
